If you haven’t seen True Grit, I totally recommend it – even if it is just for the movie’s 14-year-old star Hailee Steinfeld. While I really enjoyed the film as a whole, I fell in love with Hailee and her tough-as-nails portrayal of a young girl trying to avenge her father’s death. An even bigger surprise has been this teen’s performance on the red carpet. She has been one of my favorites at the Globes, SAGs and now at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, above, wearing Alberta Ferretti.

Somehow she always manages to look age appropriate and fashion forward at the same time, and I’m particularly loving her pop of red with a cute (and affordable) clutch from H&M and shoes from Aldo. This is a great way to make a solid white or black dress stand out from the crowd. If you do decide to wear shoes and a bag of the same color, try to mix it up with different textures or materials — stay away from pieces that are too matchy-matchy.

Stripes can be terrifying to women, mainly because we were always told to avoid horizontal stripes in order to look as svelte as possible. So what’s a lady to do when these symmetrical lines are back in a big way? Style.com is “In the Mood For: Stripes” this week, and I have to agree that the look is showing up everywhere.

Whether you’re feeling preppy or just a bit avant garde, stripes can convey totally different styles. If you’re not ready to start wearing the lines on your clothes, why not try them on your favorite handbag? Here are my picks for super stripes for 2011:

Pantone 2011 Color of the Year?

Presenting: Honeysuckle! This is Pantone’s annual color of the year choice, just in time for your holiday sale shopping. This warm rose color is admittedly feminine, but in my opinion the pretty pink is strong enough to avoid the much-dreaded pastel label. Plus, I love a man in a pink shirt or tie!

Want to get in on the trend early? We totally endorse the gorgeous patent Chanel bag below in nearly the exact shade.

While it may at times seem inaccessible, Dita Von Teese’s pinup/burlesque/retro style is often times made up of a few very easy-to-wear pieces that would look good in anyone’s wardrobe. Take, for example, her look at the Jean Paul Gaultier Ready to Wear Spring/Summer 2011 show on October 2. Gorgeous crocodile clutch? Check. Sparkly Louboutins? Check. Long gloves? Yes, please.

Very Quilted

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that bags other than Chanel come in quilted materials. But they definitely do, and one of our current faves is the updated Miu Miu Coffer bag carried by Rachel Bilson, above. The elongated diamond pattern and oversized turn lock is just unusual enough to turn heads, but the oversized silhouette and rich shade of brown make it perfect for every day use. Looking for a black bag that is making the rounds on the arms of young Hollywood? The Chanel Bowler is a hot ticket these days. I think stars like Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson and Avril Lavigne are attracted to the bag because it’s roomy enough for all of their necessities and the oversized chain detail feels a little bit rock and roll.

Right now we have the 12″ version in calfskin as well as a huge 17″ patent version with black resin hardware. Wouldn’t the jumbo be perfect as a carry-on bag for your next trip?

White Hot Watches

The Chanel J12 was one of the most-wanted watches a couple of years ago. Tons of celebrities have been spotted wearing the white version (like Ashley Tisdale, above) in ultra-cool ceramic. Even if you’re not into the oversized Chanel version, there’s other ways to wear white that can even be understated. Here are my three favorites that are perfect for a summer timepiece:

Cartier Santos 100 Stainless Steel automatic watch. I love the white leather strap paired with the industrial-looking square face.

Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Stainless Steel and Diamond automatic watch. This throwback watch is meant to reference Art Deco, and the great patent leather strap and diamonds are perfect feminine touches.

Audemars Piguet Facettes 18-karat gold and diamond watch. Tons of diamonds and a white lizard strap? Definitely a girl’s best friend.

Friday Favorites: Going Gray

Have you noticed all the interest in gray hair this month? First, Vogue taps quirky model fave Kristen McMenamy to appear in a huge fashion spread shot by David Sims, and then Lady Gaga shows up on the Nick Knight-shot cover of the September issue of Vanity Fair also sporting long, gray tresses. Kelly Osbourne has even been seen around town in a light gray/lavender ‘do, adding to the notion that the color isn’t just for high-end magazine shoots.

While I absolutely loved the McMenamy shoot and really like the Gaga cover, it’s not necessarily easy to pull off this look in real life. So why not just invest in a gorgeous gray bag and call it a day? Here are my Friday favorites for this week:
