Oscar gold medals

March 9, 2010

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of dresses to talk about at the Oscars, so I needed an extra day to process this year! I wanted to start with my own personal red carpet favorites (other critics be darned!) and why I think they worked. I’ll also slide in some great ways to accessorize like the stars. Let’s get started!

Vera Farmiga in Marchesa and Fred Leighton jewelry.

Love love love. Vera was really a vision of fab in this deep, dark pink ruffled gown. I found this dress a risk that really worked. The color played off of her fair skin beautifully and the silhouette, while dramatic, wasn’t overpowering. It felt modern and classic at the same time.

Her simple Leighton jewelry (1920’s Diamond Ear Clips; 1960’s Diamond Cluster Cocktail Ring; Diamond Leaf Brooch in her hair) let the dress really do all the talking. Get Vera’s look with our Platinum Art Deco 1920’s 2.50 ctw European-Cut Diamond Disc Earrings.

Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

It’s just. so. pretty. Normally I’m not a fan of wispy pastels, but this watercolor-esque dress works on so many levels. Even though it’s there’s a lot of fabric here, it feels light and airy and perfect for spring. It’s so hard to do a print for formalwear but this dress gets the job done. The criss-cross bodice is ultra slimming and her natural multicolor diamond earrings finish the look without being overdone.

Want a big, sparkly earring like Rachel’s without spending the big bucks? This pair of huge vintage lucite earrings is a lot of look for not a lot of money.

Gabourey Sidibe in Marchesa.

She’s been at every major red carpet event this season, but I think she finally nailed it at the Oscars. This dress is what Mo’Nique’s royal blue number wishes it was–it’s full of personality but still jaw-droppingly glamorous at the same time. Again, the use of the criss-cross bodice is ultra flattering and the sparkly floral appliques make the draped silhouette shine.

I liked her jewelry choices as well: a grouping of blackened platinum, diamond and sapphire pieces by Schwartz. These Estate White Gold, Diamond, Blue Sapphire & Akoya Pearl earrings have the same palette and will never go out of style.
