Friday Favorites: Lovely Leopard

August 13, 2010

Animal prints may be hot this season, but it’s leopard that’s about to really boil over. Showing up everywhere on the runways (including Dries Van Noten, above left, and Louis Vuitton, right), the cool thing about this year’s leopard is how many different ways you can wear it. Rather than just sticking to the most realistic skin, designers are changing up the color, playing with proportion, and printing it on a wide variety of materials.

Here are our leopard Friday Favorites:

DEREK LAM Pony Hair Leopard Spotted Clutch. Totally chic, and now priced under $500.

JIMMY CHOO Patent Leather Leopard Riki. Take a walk on the wild side with this purple tote.

MANOLO BLAHNIK Leopard Suede Heels sz 39. Did someone say metallic suede leopard? So very sexy.

Drew’s Very Vintage

August 11, 2010

Drew Barrymore is one of my favorite celebs–I so admire her ability to be herself, at all times, even when her look or style may be unpopular. That’s why I love her ensemble at last night’s Nylon + Express August Denim Issue Party in West Hollywood–she chose a $25 vintage dress picked up at an Austin shop.

I’m a sucker for anything sequined, and the slightly slouchy shape is more sophisticated than a skintight mini. Want to check out some of our favorite vintage pieces right now? Here’s our three favorite shimmery accessories:

Ciner Vintage Cognac and Grey Crystal Swirl Pin. This would look great as a hair accessory (pinned next to a chic chignon) or pinned on a simple clutch for evening.

Judith Leiber Rare Vintage Pale Lilac Velvet & Crystal Evening Clutch. Just a touch of sparkle makes this bag extra special.

Vintage Italian Rhinestone Cuff Bracelet. This extra-wide bracelet is the only accessory you need with a little black dress.

Ultra chic cases

August 5, 2010

This just-launched Bottega Veneta suitcase is making the blog rounds today, and it’s no surprise that people are interested. Made from soft-finished matte black alligator, priced at $53,000, and named Nero, this is not just your average piece of luggage. Besides just looking really, really pretty, this case has every upgrade you can think of, including locks, black alligator handles, a removable garment bag and burnished metal hardware.

While luxe luggage can be a pricey purchase, these pieces are really made to last. Exotic skins, if treated properly, can outlast any modern materials. Want to peruse some pre-owned options? Try our selection of suitcases, carry-ons and attaches, some in crocodile, ostrich or even alligator. If you’re partial to vintage and like the Bottega Veneta, try either this Hermes black crocodile briefcase or this Gucci brown crocodile briefcase for a similar look.

In the Jungle

June 29, 2010

I was taking a look back through Style.com‘s Fall 2010 Accessory Report just to see if the predictions are as valuable as I thought–and guess what? Candy Pratts Price was right on the money with her choices. We’ve been featuring snakeskin bags all week on Portero.com, so her “Exotic Skins” category is really continuing to hit home for me.

While exotics like python, lizard or crocodile might not be easy on the wallet, they are extremely durable and will last a lifetime if properly cared for.  Basically, these materials need to stay nourished in order to prevent drying, cracking or splitting. Here are some general rules of thumb:

-Never use household chemicals or alcohol to clean leather skins

-Snakeskin should always be cleaned in the direction of the scales

-Mink oil can be used on matte finishes of alligator/crocodile, but you should avoid the stitching when applying

-Keep out of extreme light, heat and wet conditions

One of my favorites currently for sale is the fabulous vintage Chanel Crocodile shoulder bag shown above. Interested in more exotic skins? Click here to shop.

Festival Chic

June 29, 2010

I had the chance to attend the Coachella festival just outside of Palm Springs earlier this year, and it was definitely a fantastic place for people-watching. The London version–Glastonbury–was this past weekend and it looks like the same grungy/boho/hipster look was again in full effect. Besides the ubiquitous jean short-shorts, celebs like Emma Watson (left) and Sienna Miller were spotted in multiple bracelets, long-strapped bags (like Emma’s LV) and fabulous belts.

Get a similar funky festival look with some of my favorites:

Carolina Bucci 18-karat gold and black silk bracelet

Louis Vuitton Ebene Damier Canvas camera bag

Gianni Versace Medusa Medallion belt

Vintage Mexican silver cuff

Fendi logo Messenger bag

Piling it On

December 2, 2009

This picture really says it all, folks. When Barbara Walters is competing with Lady Gaga for title of “Most Accessorized”, you know that a trend has really hit its peak. (But before we talk baubles, let me point out that Babs is 80 YEARS OLD. Amazing. This woman must have the fountain of youth bottled!)

Gaga chose to go with a huge crystal brooch and lots of feathers and flowers for her sitdown on Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009. Barbara chose an enormous necklace with two strands and a drop along with a huge butterfly belt. This is probably the tamest I’ve ever seen Gaga, and you know what? I like it. She looks like a lady that still has some edge. Barbara, on the other hand, made a mistake in my opinion with the belt and the necklace–the two are competing for our attention.

Want to make your own statement? Here are some standout jewels and accessories that are sure to get you noticed throughout the holiday season:

ANDY GÖTZ Sterling Silver Chain Necklace

Angela Caputi Black & Clear Paste Bead & Rhinestone Large Clip-On Drop Earrings

If you haven’t had a chance to scroll through Candy Pratts Price’s Spring Trends slideshow on Style.com yet, definitely give yourself a few minutes to check out some must-have items for 2010. I, personally, am a shoe person, and sometimes I think those little accessories can tell you a lot of what you need to know about trends as a whole.

Take, for example, the brand new bold leather shoes by Jimmy Choo, Balenciaga and Nicholas Kirkwood (above, left-right). Just a little punch of neon definitely goes a long way — imagine any of these peep-toes paired with basic black, and guess which will stand out more. This really continues to make the case for neon accents for spring, so make sure to include a pop of ultra-bright color in your upcoming buys!

Book Club: No Mere Bagatelles

October 21, 2009

I was excited to read in today’s WWD that there’s a soon-to-be-released biography of handbag maven Judith Leiber. You probably know all about her gorgeous, bejeweled and exotic skin handbags, but you might not know that the 88-year-old designer is also a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. in 1947.

In “No More Bagatelles: Telling the Story of Handbag Genius Judith Leiber & Modernist Artist Gerson Leiber”, Jeffrey Sussman explores Leiber’s early life and the start of her company, as well as the relationship with her husband, Garson. It’s perfect timing for the self-published book–the designer is being honored with a retrospective this week at NYC’s Bergdorf Goodman (and later at Neiman Marcus in Dallas and Houston) featuring an exhibit of some of her most iconic bags.

Catch Leiber in person at the Bergdorf flagship this Friday, October 23, or shop our collection of her spectacular handbags and accessories now!
