Green with Envy

July 27, 2010

I’ve always been a fan of emeralds. It could partially be because it’s my birthstone (May), but I think I’ve always been attracted to the mysterious and delicate nature of emeralds. They are somewhat soft and prone to inclusions (cracks and imperfections) which means that finding a good stone is all the more rare.

It’s nice to see celebrities wearing more emeralds, like Miranda Kerr (left), in a stunning emerald and pearl necklace and Angelina Jolie (right) in emerald drops. Angelina, in particular, is often seen wearing emeralds–I have a feeling she has an affinity for the green stones that goes beyond the aesthetic.

Want to learn more about emeralds? Check out the website for Gemfields, a Zambian emerald mining company. You can learn a lot here about the lore and the history of emeralds, and why they are so precious. You can also shop our selection of emeralds–hopefully you’ll find your own treasure!

507caratrough

September 24, 2009 was a lucky day in the South African Petra Diamond¬†Cullinan mine when a 507.55 carat rough diamond (above)¬†was found among the rubble. The huge stone–extremely rare and apparently of exceptional color and quality–is one of the top 20 largest high-quality rough diamonds ever found. Amazingly, three other very large rough diamonds were found in the same run at sizes of 168, 58.5 and 53.3 carats each.

I particularly love stories about Cullinan because I was lucky enough to visit the mine as part of a press trip several years ago. It’s amazing to see the vast amounts of land and resources used to unearth these relatively tiny gems.
