Grammy Glamour

February 14, 2011

Alright, I’m just going to say it: I found the Grammys kind of fun last night. Even though the winners were completely predicted by the performance right before, and even though Rihanna looks good but can’t really sing live, there were still some surprises and some great clothes. Unlike the super safe movie awards gowns, the Grammys give celebs a chance to get sassy and show their personalities. Case in point: Jennifer Hudson in Versace, Neil Lane Jewels and Christian Louboutin shoes. By far my favorite of the night, she had just the right amount of shimmer, sex appeal and class to feel rock and roll without going overboard.

Jennifer Lopez went for ultra silver shimmer in her Pucci mini, Cartier jewels, Swarovski clutch and Louboutins, but it works. She followed the rule of short skirt, long sleeves, and went minimal on the hair and makeup. The Grammys are really all about the sequin, so JLo knew that to make a statement, she’d have to rock the look from head to toe.

My final favorite was Lea Michele, also opting for Pucci. But her dress couldn’t be more different than JLo’s – instead of sparkle, she chose a plunging neckline with lace inserts and a sky-high slit. The hot pink lips and Lorraine Schwartz bracelet were the perfect additions to a slinky, sultry ensemble.

If you want to get your own red carpet rock and roll look, a silver clutch will never do you wrong. Here are some of our favorites:

Dapper Dials

September 14, 2010

Zac Efron might still be working on being taken seriously as a leading man, but he is definitely is emerging as a style icon for men. Whether or not you’re a fan of the beard, you can’t deny that his gray suit and Cartier Calibre watch look pretty dapper.

There’s a lot to like about this watch, but I’m particularly fond of the oversized black dial and the sophisticated (but unusual) Ruman Numeral markers. Like the look of a black dial? Here are some of our favorites:

White Hot Watches

The Chanel J12 was one of the most-wanted watches a couple of years ago. Tons of celebrities have been spotted wearing the white version (like Ashley Tisdale, above) in ultra-cool ceramic. Even if you’re not into the oversized Chanel version, there’s other ways to wear white that can even be understated. Here are my three favorites that are perfect for a summer timepiece:

Cartier Santos 100 Stainless Steel automatic watch. I love the white leather strap paired with the industrial-looking square face.

Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Stainless Steel and Diamond automatic watch. This throwback watch is meant to reference Art Deco, and the great patent leather strap and diamonds are perfect feminine touches.

Audemars Piguet Facettes 18-karat gold and diamond watch. Tons of diamonds and a white lizard strap? Definitely a girl’s best friend.

The Annenberg Diamond

Good news on the auction front: several major jewels recently sold at prices far above their estimates. This is exciting on a couple of levels: First, it means the economy is starting to recover, which is a good thing for everyone. Second, it just shows you that certain brands and classic style never really lose its value.

Point in case: The Annenberg diamond (above), a 32.01-carat D-flawless stone mounted in a ring by Manhattan jeweler David Webb, sold for $7.7 million at Christie’s, much higher than the $3 million to $5 million pre-sale estimate.

Another high point was a diamond and rock crystal bow brooch by Cartier estimated at $200,000 – $300,000 that sold for $1.1 million. These buyers obviously know that if you invest in time-honored brands and spectacular gemstones, there’s an inherent value that will never go away.
